News > Stock Car Winter National R2 Leics 28/12/2008

The second round of the winter national series saw a good turn out of 36 drivers, some of which had travelled a great distance, which is very much appreciated, thanks lads!.

The Track conditions were very cold but dry, practice began at 8.30 and early indications were that the grip was pretty good.

The favoured tyre choice seemed to be Ufra 40s on the front outside, precision gold or Rocket magenta on the inside and a pair of Champ Pros across the back.

There was a real buzz around the pits with everyone keen to enjoy a good days racing,

The first round of heats saw Lee Wearing setting the pace with a very good 51 laps, followed by Mark Whitaker on 49, Jody Foster and Michael Overland both on 48 closely followed by, Scott Grocock, Richard Swales and Stevie Overland all on 47, with Paul Dexter getting a win in heat one with 46 laps.

It looked as though it would be pretty tight to qualify for the finals, with the two best scores from three to count.

The second round of heats kicked off with another win for Paul Dexter with a 47, 2nd was Dick Batty on 46, the track seemed to have more grip and looked a little faster.

Richard Swales put in another 47 to win heat 2, whilst both Michael and Stevie Overland both failed to match there first round scores.

Heat 4 produced a win for Mark on 50 2nd was Scott on 48 and Johnny Goodacre on 47.

Lee put in a blistering 52 in heat 5 and seemed destined for the final, heat 6 was quick with Jody wining on 51 followed by Alex Wood on 47 and Simon Farrer on 45. After a quick 10 minute break it was onto the 3rd and final set of qualifying heats, at this point there were still over 20 drivers still in with a chance of qualification to the finals, that shows how close stock car racing is!.

Dick Batty set the pace in heat one, just missing out on the magical 50 with 49.5 laps and new boy Dave "The Artist" Gwillam put in a creditable 47 along with Danny Overland.

Richard Swales headed up heat 2 with 48 laps, Stevie also put in a 48 in heat 3, heat 4 produced a very fast heat with Mark on 51, Scott on 50 and Johnny Goodacre on 49.

On to heat 5 and it was the man to beat Lee Wearing who put in a fine drive to secure FTD and a place in the final with a 52.

Heat 6 saw Alex Wood come out on top with 49 laps after Jody to a big hit and damaged the rear suspension stub.

That was qualifying done, the two drivers straight through to the final were Lee and Mark.

So there were 4 places up for grabs and 12 drivers after them, the two semi finals produced some fine racing, with Alex Wood and Richard Swales going through from semi one and Scott Grocock and Tom Gardner making it through semi 2, so the final line up was: Lee Wearing, Mark Whitaker, Richard Swales, Alex Wood, Tom Gardner and Scott Grocock.

Lee got off to a flyer closely followed by Richard and Alex after some fast and entertaining racing it ended up Lee 1st, Alex 2nd, Mark 3rd, Scott 4th, Richard 5th, Tom 6th, a big thank you to the Leicester club for putting on a great meeting and happy New Year to all.
